Wave of hope homeschool hybrid learning centers @ Weld & foothills
Tonya Van Beber, former Colorado House Representative (House District 48), is a third-generation native of Colorado and Weld County who grew up on a farm in northern Weld County. Living in the Eaton, Evans, and Greeley areas of the county, she has experienced and is familiar with the various concerns and challenges from one of the largest and fastest-growing counties in the state. These life experiences have been instrumental in advocating for agriculture/ranching, education, family and community/business development.
Education and Early Career
As a 1989 graduate of Eaton High School, Tonya received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Social Sciences/Psychology. She then spent the next 10 years at the Greeley Tribune as a District Manager and as the Newspapers in Education Coordinator/Marketing Manager. From there, she owned and published two direct mail newspapers in Weld and Larimer counties. For 17 years, Tonya was blessed to teach at a charter school where her son and foster children attended and taught Reading Intervention, World and American History, Leadership, and 7 Habits for Highly Effective Teens at University Schools. In addition, she provided educational consulting to schools around the nation in guided advisory (family and student-driven, whole child) and offered instructional coaching for educators in Weld County. Tonya received her Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership with a principal’s licensure from Regis University in Denver in 2013 and was an instructional coach prior becoming the Executive Director of Wave of Hope Home School Enrichment Program and Learning Centers.
Leadership
As a graduate of the Leadership Program of the Rockies in 2018 and an involved community member in Weld County and the state of Colorado, Tonya held a position on the Weld County Council as an At-Large elected official, having been elected in November 2018. As a former State of Colorado House Representative for House District 48, she served on the following committees: Energy & Environment, Health & Insurance, Interim Behavioral Health, Early Childhood & School Readiness, Commission on Higher Education, Business & Labor Affairs and Transportation and Local Government Affairs. She also served as the Co-Chair of the Children’s Caucus.
Advocacy and Community Involvement
As a mother, former host family, foster parent, educator, business owner and twice elected representative at both the local and state level over the last three decades, her efforts in Colorado have illuminated her advocacy and success in protecting school choice, foster care and adoption, constitutional rights, family and parental rights and academic excellence. These issues have been a focal point in her family, inside and outside of the classroom and the state capitol.
Tonya has volunteered with various community organizations, schools, and political groups that focus on America’s founding principles and how they can be applied to the challenges that communities face today. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Foster Source, a Colorado non-profit, and the National Foster Parent Association.

5-8 YEAR OLDS

Josie Tennant is the proud mother of a 5 year old boy, named JJ, who attends Wave of Hope. Her favorite thing about Wave of Hope Homeschool Hybrid Learning Center is that we support parents who are homeschooling to give children a safe space to socialize and build relationships. Whether its individualized learning time in the morning or paired-shared learning in the afternoon, Josie's commitment to Wave of Hope's mission to support homeschool families so that we can help children secure the blessings of Liberty and enjoy a happy and prosperous life as they become citizens of tomorrow.
As a web developer, Josie provides website maintenance and ensures that the @Weld Enrichment program has a family feel by designing lessons and opportunities for her 5-8 year olds to learn from older attendees the FUNdamentals in reading, writing and math using games, hands-on activities and movement. She understands the importance of ensuring that ages 9-14 are role models for their younger counterparts and that they are engaged in leadership opportunities for younger attendees as often as possible.
Her favorite part of being a content leader for Kindergarten through 3rd grade is, as she states, "I get to be a part of their lives as they learn about the world and themselves. I'm very passionate about the children learning emotional regulation by labeling our emotions and setting expectations for our behaviors, as well as how to work in teams and communicate effectively. Children are the next generation and I will continue to pour my heart and energy into their lives to build the best versions of themselves."

Wave of hope @ Foothills
11-17 year olds

Sonja Strandquist is a licensed 6-12 English teacher and tutor. She has experience teaching in full classrooms, scaffolding and differentiating lessons, leading whole and small group discussions, and tutoring students one-on-one.
Her teaching methods are classically rooted, and her philosophy of education puts students first. She sees teachers as guides, while students themselves learn through exploration.
Sonja is the youngest of 6 children, homeschooled through 7th grade by her wonderful mom. At a young age, she displayed a love and passion for reading. This creativity later took root in a love of writing when she took her first creative writing class in 6th grade. From then on, she could do nothing but read and write and explore all the endless possibilities found within the world of literature.
When it came time to choose a career path, Sonja could only see one clear option: teaching. With her passion for stories, Sonja loves to share this passion with others and enjoys seeing students become just as enamored with literature as she is. Even if they start off slow, she is confident every student will find that “story” that captures their heart and will soon learn to appreciate the time and effort that every writer puts into their works. Reading is an adventure. Writing is a journey. Everyone can learn to value this process, and this is what Sonja strives to show her students.
